How Do You Switch Between Guitar Chords Without Pausing?

How Do You Switch Between Guitar Chords Without Pausing?

Mar 22, 2025

Picture this.

You can play each chord individually.

But when you try to switch from one to the other, there’s an annoying pause.

I struggled with this myself for years.

Here's how I fixed it:

1. Slow Down

This is the answer to most guitar-playing problems. I know you don't want to hear this, but it’s true.

2. Move Each Finger in a Straight Line

Train each finger to move directly from where it is in the first chord to where it is in the second chord. Avoid wasted movement.

3. Use Open Strings To Buy Time

This is for arpeggio playing, where you’re plucking one note of the chord at a time. When the first note of the next chord is an open string, you can pluck that open string while moving your left hand.

4. Place Fingers in Order

This is another tip for arpeggio playing.  If the next chord doesn't start with an open string, set up your left-hand fingers in the order you're going to pluck the notes. As long as each finger is there in time for the string to be plucked, there won't be a pause.
