What Strings Are Best For Classical And Acoustic Guitars?

You don't love the sound you're getting from your guitar.

Could a different type of strings improve the tone?

It's worth trying!

I will share my experience with some of the strings available for classical and acoustic guitars.

Classical Guitar (Nylon String)

For many years, my classical guitar strings of choice were Savarez Corum basses with Alliance trebles.

I like the strength and projection of these strings.

The Alliance trebles are a carbon fiber composite, and they seem to have higher tension than nylon strings. For that reason, I have used the mixed tension set with high-tension basses and normal tension trebles. 

I enjoy these strings but find the 1^st string of the Alliance trebles can be a bit shrill. For that reason, I have recently experimented with other strings.

Another brand I like is Augustine Regals. I have used both the high-tension Augustine Regals and the normal-tension Augustine Regals. These strings sound excellent in the first few days of playing, but I find that they wear out quickly.

Recently, I have returned to the strings that many classical guitarists use, D’Addario Pro Arte. I like both the Hard Tension D’Addario Pro Arte and the Normal Tension D’Addario Pro Arte. 

I find that D'Addario strings are amazingly reliable. I have never gotten a bad set of D'Addario, while I have occasionally gotten a bad set of Savarez or Augstine.

So the strings I am currenlty using for classical guitar are the warm-sounding and reliable D’Addario ProArte strings. 

Acoustic Guitar (Steel String)

D’Addario makes good acoustic strings as well. Their Phosphor Bronze Acoustic Guitar Strings are popular for good reason.

But for steel string, I prefer Elixir. I like the Phosphor Bronze Acoustic Guitar Strings with Nanoweb Coating.  I find that they sound great and last a long time.

So the strings I'm currently using for acoustic guitar are Elixir.
